Beyond the Herman Rosenblat Fraud - Truth in History

The idea behind finding the truth in history is not just to expose frauds. The Holocaust fraud cases get attention because it is not only such a terrible time in history, but because it is such a difficult period to even fathom, much less allow to be sugar coated in fairy tales.

Truth in history, or the lack thereof, can affect any of us in our daily lives. Mythological threads from centuries ago can prevent us from learning the lessons of real history. Misrepresentations in contemporary times can alter our judgement and evaluation of events that directly affect us today.

The Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) has been updated from a measure similar to the lowest level of legal standard, the "preponderance of evidence," to something more akin to the legal standard of "clear and convincing evidence."
http://www.bcgcertification.org/resources/standard.html

The reality is that the same GPS defined measures can also lead to the higihest legal standard "beyond a reasonable doubt."

However, it is worth noting that legal evidence is not subjected to any of the tests that we as genealogists know are required to resolve the quality of the source or conflicting records.

When it comes to media "fact checking," the procedures include no analysis for how those facts might have been rearranged into a completely different story, augmented by statements that are assumed to be impossible to prove.

"The Myth of the Impossible Proof" is not accepted by genealogists. There is no reason for the analysis methods in other disciplines to be lagging behind, except that they are ignorant about what we do and why it works.

“Apples over the fence“ Holocaust Love Story Book Fraud Canceled

The long arms of truth in history can reach to yesterday, a decade ago or centuries past.

Further updates on the Rosenblat "apples over the fence" story after the "non-fiction" book has been recalled.

The Rosenblat agent statement.

Actually the book's website has not been updated.
http://www.angelatthefence.com/index.html

Nor has the movie producer's.
http://www.atlanticoverseaspictures.com/

In fact, movie producer Salomon says he will continue - no surprise, given his heated threats throughout the investigation. http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_plank/archive/2008/12/27/movie-based-on-canceled-memoir-will-go-forward-though-script-may-change.aspx

Holocaust researcher Ken Waltzer talks about the responsibility of the culture makers.
http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_plank/archive/2008/12/27/ken-waltzer-on-canceled-memoir.aspx

Ken's full statement also included credit for our work for this story - "I want to thank those who have worked with me – particularly forensic genealogists Sharon Sergeant and Colleen Fitzpatrick ..."

Deborah Lipstadt published Ken's full statement.

Hillel Italie's AP first reports on the cancellation give a pass for the motivation, but unfortunately, there is more to that story also.

Today's AP report highlights just some of the awareness that is needed to see that there are many parallels in fraudulent stories - including those that tipped us off in the Rosenblat case.

Original cancellation Statement

Sad story.

Publisher wants their money back. Is that a precedent?

The movie producer is trying to do a spin to say the "real story is
better/worse than the made up story" to keep his movie deal alive. Our
team says - "Gee, we have seen that movie before."

Oprah hasn't weighed in yet.

We have alot more information from our research that we haven't revealed
yet, but the media industry is not done jockeying so we will wait and see.

It is not a pretty picture.
